A lot of the things that happen here make a lot more sense if you know how horror movies usually go...pay close attention to monsters and victims, and what both "categories" are allowed to do. "Monsters" have a natural advantage and can bend the rules in some cases, and "victims" -- even if there's something they're usually good at, circumstances will arrange themselves so that it doesn't do them any good! All of us here have been in one role or the other. Try to be the monster, whenever you can.
