[She doesn't know if that makes it better or worse. On the one hand: it's nice to know that Maple doesn't have to deal with the psychological reality of his mom dying over and over. On the other hand, she feels bad sometimes because Maple clearly knows she's upset? But she doesn't think he really gets why and why his normal cheer-up tactics don't work.]

[He's quiet a moment, thinking, as Tybolt flops down by Cairo's ankles with a happy mrrrp.]
There's something I can do now, that I couldn't before. At level three, god followers can give a quick resurrection power to someone who's not affiliated. Instead of having to wait for the Fog to come in, you'd come back in two or three days. You revive in Dyster, which is a pretty spooky place! But it's not hard to find your way back out.
[He meets her eyes.]
Want it?

Why me? Feels like something you keep in reserve for someone who needs it.
[Well. Not "needs it," but... she doesn't want to imply that Atem doesn't care about her. They're really good friends, and she's getting the vibe that she's one of the only people who came by to check on him, which feels wrong. Then again, they're kind of the same like that: big social circle, friendly with a lot of folks, but very small and almost miniscule inner circles.
At the same time, it feels like he's trying to repay her for that, but she would do it anyway and that... Cairo's mom always said that you take from people who can afford it and you give to those who can't. She's just not sure which category Atem falls into.]

The answer's pretty simple. Part of it is, she's inner-circle now in a way she wasn't before January, before now. Part of it is, she came back from the dead and wouldn't talk about anything but pizza controversy. And part of it, is...]
I can only give the perk to someone who's neutral. Fog followers already have the benefit, and a Fourth follower won't be eligible. Most of the people who are still talking to me are on one side or the other...I don't have many neutral friends now, and there are even fewer who I think would accept it.
[If she turns it down, he'll ask Altair. But Atem didn't see Altair make a public post to distract himself from his own death...Cairo's the one he wants to offer it to first. And, if Cairo dies again...it'll mean Riley spends fewer days alone in her apartment.]

[That it would need to go to someone neutral didn't even occur to her. It's a good benefit, though. It would make things so much easier if she didn't come back to life and realize that she left a conversation hanging for almost two weeks, on account of she died before she could actually get her shit together enough to say some words to Riley. Although hopefully the exact circumstances of that don't happen again because it sucked ass.]
... And it doesn't mean, like, I'm a follower or anything if I accept, right? Not that it's a dealbreaker, I just like to know the deal before I sign on the dotted line.
[It would make Riley upset, is the thing. Not the benefit itself, but the being a Fog Follower and Cairo's trying to take Riley's feelings into account more often than she used to.]

No, it won't mean you're a follower.
[Smart to know what you're agreeing to beforehand; he doesn't mind the questioning in the least. If anything, there's a slightly approving slant to his mouth and expression in his eyes as she checks the fine print.]
You won't owe the Fog anything for it -- you're unaffiliated, just protected in case of death.

[Cairo's thinking about Mukuro saying that the Fog doesn't really abide by human rules, on account of being a god, and she doesn't trust a god to not weaponize gifts. She knows enough of the Bible to know what a god's favor can look like. It's not like Cairo's going to look a gift horse in the mouth, but she also wants it to be clear that she'll take the L if this becomes a problem.]
Not that I think that's going to happen, but if it does.
no subject
And if it becomes a liability for you, let me know. I don't expect anything will go wrong, but if it does...
[If the benefit turns out to have strings for Cairo that Atem doesn't know about, and the situation would be better for her if the boon were revoked, he wants to know. This is meant to help, and if it doesn't, then it's no good, is it?
But until she says she no longer wants it...she'll be Atem's tier 3 protected neutral.
His manner lightens, though, now that it's settled.]
...ah, but you didn't come over to talk about this, did you?
[He's not sure if she wanted to talk about the broadcast, or why he did it, or just keep him company and eat snacks, but either way, this probably isn't what she had in mind!]
